Pineapples are a good source of antioxidants, which may reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and certain cancers. Many of the antioxidants in pineapple are bound, so they may have longer lasting effects. Pineapples contain bromelain, a group of digestive enzymes that breaks down proteins. This may aid digestion, especially in those with pancreatic insufficiency. Pineapple contains compounds that reduce oxidative stress and inflammation, both of which are linked to cancer. One of these compounds is the enzyme bromelain, which may stimulate cell death in certain cancer cells and aid white blood cell function. Pineapples have anti-inflammatory properties that may boost the immune system. The anti-inflammatory properties of pineapple may provide short-term symptom relief for people with common types of arthritis. The bromelain in pineapples may reduce the inflammation, swelling, bruising and pain that occurs after surgery. Bromelain’s anti-inflammatory properties may also aid recovery after strenuous exercise by reducing tissue inflammation.

Ginger is high in gingerol, a substance with powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Just 1–1.5 grams of ginger can help prevent various types of nausea, including chemotherapy-related nausea, nausea after surgery, and morning sickness. Ginger may help improve weight-related measurements. These include body weight and the waist-hip ratio. Ginger may be effective at reducing symptoms of osteoarthritis, especially osteoarthritis of the knee. Ginger has been shown to lower blood sugar levels and improve various heart disease risk factors in people with type 2 diabetes. Ginger appears to speed up emptying of the stomach, which can be beneficial for people with indigestion and related stomach discomfort. Ginger appears to be very effective against menstrual pain when taken at the beginning of the menstrual period. Ginger can lead to significant reductions in LDL (bad) cholesterol, total cholesterol, and blood triglyceride levels. Ginger contains the substance gingerol, which appears to have protective effects against cancer. However, more studies are needed. Ginger can protect against age-related damage to the brain. It can also help improve brain function in middle-aged women. Ginger may help fight harmful bacteria and viruses, which could reduce your risk for infections.

Turmeric contains curcumin, a substance with powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Most studies use turmeric extracts that are standardized to include large amounts of curcumin. Chronic inflammation contributes to some common health conditions. Curcumin can suppress many molecules known to play major roles in inflammation, but its bioavailability needs to be enhanced. Curcumin boosts levels of the brain hormone BDNF, which increases the growth of new neurons and may help fight various degenerative processes in your brain. (Many common brain disorders have been linked to decreased levels of BDNF protein, including depression and Alzheimer’s disease). Curcumin has beneficial effects on several factors known to play a role in heart disease. Plus, it’s an anti-inflammatory agent and antioxidant. Curcumin leads to several changes on the molecular level that may help prevent and perhaps even treat cancer. Curcumin can cross the blood-brain barrier and has been shown to lead to various improvements in the pathological process of Alzheimer’s disease. Arthritis is a common disorder characterized by joint inflammation. Many studies show that curcumin can help treat symptoms of arthritis and is, in some cases, more effective than anti-inflammatory drugs. A study in 60 people with depression showed that curcumin was as effective as Prozac in alleviating symptoms of the condition. Due to its many positive health effects, such as the potential to prevent heart disease, Alzheimer’s, and cancer, curcumin may aid longevity.

Limes are high in vitamin C, providing over 20% of your daily needs. They also contain small amounts of iron, calcium, vitamin B6, thiamine, potassium, and more. Cinnamon is a popular spice. It’s high in cinnamaldehyde, which is thought to be responsible for most of cinnamon’s health benefits. Cinnamon contains large amounts of highly potent polyphenol antioxidants. The antioxidants in cinnamon have anti-inflammatory effects, which may help lower your risk of disease. Cinnamon may improve some key risk factors for heart disease, including cholesterol, triglycerides and blood pressure. Cinnamon has been shown to significantly increase sensitivity to the hormone insulin. Cinnamon has been shown to reduce fasting blood sugar levels, having a potent anti-diabetic effect at 1–6 grams or 0.5–2 teaspoons per day. Cinnamon has been shown to lead to various improvements for Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease in animal studies. However, human research is lacking. Studies indicate that cinnamon may have protective effects against cancer. Cinnamaldehyde has antifungal and antibacterial properties, which may reduce infections and help fight tooth decay and bad breath.

Clove are high in antioxidants, including eugenol, which can help reduce oxidative stress. Studies show that the compounds in cloves may reduce cancer cell growth and promote cancer cell death. Studies show that cloves may promote oral health, thanks to their antimicrobial properties, which may help kill harmful bacteria. Some studies show that cloves and the compounds they contain may help reduce oxidative stress and protect the liver. Studies have shown that the compounds in cloves may help promote insulin production and lower blood sugar. Studies show that clove extract and manganese may help increase bone mineral density. More research is needed to confirm these effects. Studies show that clove extract and clove oil may increase the production of gastric mucus and help protect against stomach ulcers.
